THE ROLE

We have an exciting opportunity for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to champion and lead a not-for-profit organization, build relationships, and make a meaningful difference for people affected by spinal cord injury across Alberta. The CEO will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization while working in close collaboration with the management team. The CEO takes direction on general policy for Mission, Vision, and Goals from a governance board.

THE COMPANY

Spinal Cord Injury Alberta’s (SCI-AB) mission is to empower persons with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities to achieve independence and full community participation. The organization has existed for 60 years and provides programs and initiatives in social service and community integration, fitness, counseling and research support across Alberta. The team at SCI-AB consist of 20 staff with offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Grande Prairie, Red Deer, Lloydminster and Fort McMurray. SCI-AB works in close collaboration with disabled community members, government ministries, and the clinical staff at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton and the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

SCI-AB is a member of Spinal Cord Injury Canada, and operates within a unique, collaborative model across the country. Each provincial spinal cord injury organization is autonomous with its own board of directors helping to serve the province’s spinal cord injured community. The CEO of SCI-AB will fulfill a key leadership role in representing Alberta through collaboration with eight other CEO’s and Executive Directors across Canada.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but are not limited to:

Leadership

  • Foster effective collaboration, transparency and trust while enhancing a strong culture of teamwork.
  • Participate with the management team and Board of Directors in developing a vision, strategy and business plan.
  • Mentor and lead a management team consisting of a CFO and four program managers.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization and represent SIC-AB’s interests with government, community, and sponsors.
  • Lead the management team in seeking external funding and grant opportunities.
  • Lead government and industry liaison activities and communications for the team.

Financial Management

  • Secure funding for the long-term operation of the organization through fundraising, grants, social enterprise, membership development and donations.
  • Oversee the financial status of the organization, including developing long and short term financial plans.
  • Work closely with the CFO to lead and plan financial resources and prepare monthly financial reports as well as regular, comprehensive financial reports on revenues and expenditures to the Board.

Stakeholder Engagement and Government Relations

  • Engage with various stakeholders which would include funders/donors, researcher partners and various levels of government.
  • Foster and build relationships with Alberta Health Services to advocate SCI in the north and south.
  • Engage with other not for profit organizations to collaborate on initiates, build best practices, etc.
  • Manage all government relations and media relations as required.

Fund Development

  • Develop a fundraising strategic plan.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with current and potential donors, businesses, government and private foundations.
  • Develop marketing and branding strategies to increase awareness and revenue from major donors, foundations and government agencies.

Human Resources Planning and Management

  • In collaboration with the management team, determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery.
  • Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices.
  • Recruit, interview and select staff that have the right skills and abilities to help further the organization’s mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University Degree or relevant experience; MBA an asset.
  • Senior leadership experience.
  • Collaborative and inspirational leadership style that thrives in a team environment.
  • Business acumen and strong communication skills.
  • Strong industry and government relationship experience and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong in fundraising, grant writing and fund development.
  • Manage team growth and relationships province wide and from multiple locations.
  • Knowledge of research methodology.
  • Connected with the disability community.
  • Knowledge of spinal cord injury.
  • Computer skills:  MS Office, notably Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, QuickBooks, and any online or network technologies including the internet and specifically various social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.).
