THE ROLE
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Government Relations and Policy Manager to join the vibrant organization that is advancing Albertas crop sector to 2025 and beyond. The Government Relations and Policy Manager position is a high-volume, fast-paced role in the dynamic agricultural industry. This role will require the successful candidate to bring solid leadership capabilities and experience in policy analysis, research, writing and communications, as well as a strong knowledge of advocacy actions and the legislative process.

Unique to the role is working with a collaboration of eight Alberta Agricultural Commissions/Boards focusing upon agricultural environmental and other policy topics to provide direct support for the best interest of farmer members. The individual will display a high degree of professionalism and competency due to the sensitivity of issues to manage and the requirement to deal with all levels of government and industry in an expeditious and diplomatic manner.

THE COMPANY
Team Alberta represents a working collaboration between eight of Albertas crop commissions: Barley, Canola, Wheat, Potatoes, Sugar Beet, Seed Growers, Pulse Growers and while not a crop Bees are included as well. 

Team Alberta works together with the aim to provide input to policy makers, ensure long-term access to promote the sustainability of the crop sector, and advocate on behalf of farmers while enabling grass-roots advocacy by their farmer members.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Government Relations and Policy Manager position will deliver on government relations and advocacy actions and policy input development in the following areas:

  • Synthesize collaborators concerns, provide policy development support including policy research, analysis, documentation and coordination as well as coordination of internal and external messaging on policy issues.
  • Collaborate and coordinate to bring together the members of multiple stakeholders to report and connect on common issues.
  • Develop well-written documentation to support policy development and advocacy efforts including reports, policy/issues briefs, key messages, grant proposals, letters and recommendations.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of relationships with key government contacts, in both the political and public service level including organizing meetings and outreach.
  • Monitor relevant sources of information for emerging regulatory/legislative changes that could impact farmer members.
  • Represent organizations on external government, industry, and related committees, as appropriate.
  • Prepare written submissions, letters, and other responses to government consultation processes.
  • Assist with lobby registry compliance reporting.
  • Work with partners to prepare a workplan that is inclusive of member organization common priorities and execute the plan.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other Government Relations and Policy staff from other organizations as appropriate.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate, experience and skill in the following areas:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be legally able to work as a lobbyist in Alberta and in Canada.
  • University degree in political science, public policy, environment, commerce, economics or a related discipline preferred.
